THE CONTEXT The Michael Van Leesten Bridge, also known as the Providence Pedestrian Bridge, is a key landmark in Providence, Rhode Island, named after the civil rights leader Michael Van Leesten. Despite its design to promote community unity and accessibility, many people are unaware of its significance. Spanning the Providence River and connecting the East Side to downtown, the bridge is primarily used for commuting rather than as a community space. Consequently, it remains underutilized for public gatherings and events, limiting its role as a hub for community engagement.

THE APPROACH

identity of "From. Michael Van Leesten" is rooted in simplicity and vibrancy, featuring fun yet modern iconography with colorful yet toned-down colors, creating a visually inviting aesthetic that resonates with a wide range of audiences

THE CHALLENGES
  1. symbolism: brand "From. Michael Van Leesten" to represent a gift from Van Leesten to the community
  2. inclusivity: design for universal access, fostering an inclusive environment that encourages everyone to participate
  3. engagement: provide a variety of kits (picnics, games, arts and crafts) catering to diverse community interests
  4. education: include information about Michael Van Leesten to educate users about his contributions as a social activist
  5. integration: integrate with the bridge’s landscape, avoiding interference with commuter traffic

THE OUTCOME The "From. Michael Van Leesten" rental system aims to transform the Michael Van Leesten Bridge, also known as the Pedestrian Bride, into a vibrant hub for community bonding, inspired by the legacy of local social activist Michael Van Leesten. By revitalizing the bridge and its surroundings, the project honors his memory and fosters communal gathering and engagement. The rental machine serves as a symbol of the generosity and community spirit that Leesten had, offering residents access to rental kits for various recreational and bonding activities. These kits cater to diverse interests of the community, including picnics, games, and arts and crafts, encouraging regular use of the bridge as a welcoming space for individuals and families to come together to connect, relax, and enjoy each other's company.
